San Diego SmugMug with Sean Haffey

I love the diversity that SmugMug MeetUps have. Our members range from the person with their first camera, to the working professional. Our speakers also vary from wedding photographers to sports photographers.

When the San Diego SmugMug members asked for someone to come in and talk about sports photography we immediately contacted Sean Haffey of the San Diego Union Tribune. Sean’s career includes covering four Summer Olympics, 25 years of Chargers and Padres Seasons, multiple World Series and Superbowls, and most of the major stories that have happened in San Diego over the last 25 years including the large fires, storms. Sean has been shot at in conflict zones, documented both tragic and inspirational stories in the US and abroad but considers covering the Olympics to be his greatest accomplishment.

After 25 years of covering sports, Sean provided some great words of wisdom for everyone.

  • Be different. Don’t fight for the same shot that everyone else is trying to get.
  • Change your view point. Shoot high and low. Look for angles that others dont see.
  • Sports photography is more that just capturing the high impact moments. Some of the best sports images are found away from the action.
